This is a good candidate for "termination", another is dumbing down hardcore titles trying to make them appealing for casuals and ending up with a product that's crap for everybody (examples: the second Deus Ex, Myth III (*)).

 

 

(*) and Myth wasn't even really so much hardcore, it was pure tactics, not strategic, so there were even less reasons to simplify it, actually crippling it instead.

 

 

It has been done successfully only a handful of the times- all the rest have been a failure.

It's OK to try something new but if you forget the people who made your game warrant a sequel - it's kind of DUMB.
