If you've known her for 3 years and did not make a move in all that time, there was no chance for you guys to be together. You were classified as a good friend and she wasn't considering you as a potential boyfriend.
Considering that, she didn't really do anything wrong but your "best friend" is a total asshole though.
About what you're doing wrong: I'd say next time you find a girl attractive/interesting make sure you tell her as soon as possible before you become friends because if you're friends, it's all over.
