Well personal preference can keep one from liking the wii, but I don't see preference being strong enough to make someone hate the system.
The whole mainstream thing has been prevalent in the movie and music industry for awhile. Movies have their cult classics and music has their underground bands. There are people who tend to get upset when their favorite underground band goes mainstream or when tons of people are talking about that old cult classic. I am not sure they exact reason why this happens, but it does in those areas of entertainment so I see no reason why it doesn't occur in the gaming sector.
