I am sick of listening to these same arguments from old farts who lived the sixties and the seventies at the time of sexual liberation and the explosion of drug consommation.

Oh and look at the ex-athletes who fell in alcohol or drug addiction after retirement or injury because of lack of 'sensation' (rather lack of endorphin because of sport addiction refer to runner's high in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endorphin).

Back to your question 'Why is it so many groups are afraid of video games ?' :
1/ Those groups are afraid of what they don't know
2/ Addiction to TV has never been a problem. Of course, playing videogames = less time in front of the TV, so fewer people watch or are receptive to ads, which are the cornerstone of TVs business model (idk how is the situation in the rest of the world, but here in France, TV stock option are falling hard because of the shrinking mainstream audience). So, when you watch the news on TV, internet or videogames are often depicted as a bad thing because Internet/videogames are in direct concurrence of TVs shows or newspapers.

In conclusion, videogames are bad mmmkay ?

Regarding Point#2: I am sure that these same type of studies exist for TV addiction.  Unfortunately, I cannot site them off the top of my head and a Google search provides pablum but those talk about real studies/articles.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
