Think of it as in Warcraft 3, how each unit has a special ability. (Like Raiders have that rope thing that can ground flying units)
Also, most of them have to be researched first, so it takes a lot of forethought when your building towards your style, specific tech tree and strategy. Your not gonna be able to give all your units abilities, unless you amass a huge amount of resources early in the game. I think its refreshing since there was only one way to play with any kind of unit in the original StarCraft. Not so, in the sequel. You can be stealthy with Terrans or Defensive with Zerg etc., its completely up to you now.
Like in the first battle report, when the Terrans upgraded and were able to take out zealots from long distances and the zealots were too slow to fight back or escape, the "charge" ability allowed Zealots to actually be useful in battle since they can finally keep up with Terran units and chase down enemys.
I personally think its a great addition. Right now, my major concern is balance more than anything.
