I agree with your analysis, but it could also be because of the restructuring.
They are merging SCE with Vaio and Walkman, perhaps they think they can get some synergies between the PSP and those. There are also rumours that Ericsson wants to get out of the Sony Ericsson venture, and there's obviously potential for a phone+PSP mix.
