Well I think that this could be argued. The E3's in the PS2 eras weren't really that important to Sony because of simply how dominating the PS2 was.
Now Sony is at a crossroads and they are faced with perhaps, the strongest lineup for the PS3, one of the weaker lineups for their competitors, a financial crisis, a competitor with a very strong (but not crushing) lead, and demands of a price cut.
I'm not saying Sony will come out of this E3, year, or generation winning. Only that this E3 is crucial and must be used carefully and to the fullest extent possible.
