FFVII is what brought me back into console gaming, and it was the move that eventually molded me into an actual gamer (Before, I was a rabid Nintendo fanboy and a hatred to most anything SONY). I also used to be a diehard Squaresoft fanboy. So to answer your question, FF's quality just went downhill since FFX. It's that simple.
