Now that 3rd party exclusives are a thing of the past - the console battle will basically come down to this. EXCLUSIVES. I don't expect Sony to make the same mistake next gen and put out such an expensive system. Online is at a point right now where it's pretty much even. So the only difference will probably be exclusives.
Sony already has some blockbuster IP's from the previous generations... Gran Turismo, God of War, Ratchet and Clank. But they lost Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, stopped making Jak&Daxter games, and lost all their 3rd party exclusives like Res Evil, Tekken, FF, GTA, etc.
So how do you feel about their new IPs this gen? Will a true blockbuster emerge out of the bunch that will help sell systems in the future?
obviously this gen is not over, but here is my take so far...
Resistance - good, but not great. As long as Insomniac is pumping out 1 game per year, I doubt they will ever have time to polish off a game enough to get it to killer app status.
Little Big Planet - has sold surprisingly very well. I'm actually shocked. Could this little rag doll be Sonys new mascot?
MAG - all depends how it turns out. If the project turns out as planned, it will be a smash hit amongst FPS fans. 256 multiplayer absolutely dwarfs everything else out there at the moment. This game could be something special.
KillZone - I know it's not technically a new IP, but it mindaswell be. KZ2 plays and looks nothing like the first one. The first one was not nearly as popular as KZ2 is now. Most ppl playing KZ2 never touched the first one on Ps2. I think this franchise has a lot of potential and will continue to grow.
Uncharted - The sequel will be even better than the original. I'm expecting reviews in the 9.5/10 range for the sequel as it will build off the already well-made original. This franchise could have a long life span like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider.
InFamous - we'll see in a few days when it starts getting reviewed. Right now it looks really good though. Sucker Punch is a great developer and I expect we'll be seeing a couple InFamous sequels in the upcoming years.
WarHawk/StarHawk - undecided. I think with the "StarHawk" approach the game will appeal to StarWars/Halo fans a lot more. Should be interesting.
Heavy Rain - I have a feeling this game will be the sales "bust" among the group of new Ip's. Nice graphics. But other than that...? I dont think it has commercial appeal to reach the masses. Best case senerio, it will be a cult classic, rather than a big seller.
