(Sigh). Once again, Hollywood tries to screw us consumers, by making us pay twice for the same content.
The extended versions are vastly superior to the theatrical versions, in terms of pacing, scope and emotional impact. The extra footage is considerable -- I think an extra couple of hours, total -- and Tolkien's epic storyline needs the extra space.
