Professors W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne wrote a book and coined the phrase. Instead of fighting directly against your competitors, pick a related market/userbase they don't concentrate on and profit there. Example: Nintendo aims for the non 18-34 year old male market with the DS and Wii.
Wii60
Microsoft coined this soon after the Wii was annouced. Their argument was "why buy a PS3 when for the same cost you could buy a X360 and a Wii?" Brilliant marketing strategy and a good response to a Blue Ocean attempt. If you can't beat 'em, look like you're not competing with them.
HD Era
I have no idea. Probably technophiles assuming everyone would snatch up HDTVs the second they came out.
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
