I honestly don't think thats the problem. Usueally when a company is small and they want to compete with a larger company they advertise even more than said larger company does. Look at the Apple commercials as examples of what I am getting at. Apple is clearly gaining marketshare because of their advertising prowess.
The PS2 clearly ruined Sony in a few ways. When Sony was dominating the world (with the PS2) there really was no need to advertise a lot for it. They dominated and there was nothing going to stop that.
But since the PS3 come out they still have a PS2 mentality. Which has gotten Sony into so much crap. They are no longer the big boy on the block and need to get out and be "hungry" again, and I honestly don't see it in them now.
