I remember hearing one guy on Gamespot saying that if Roger Ebert watched the cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4, he'd take back his, "Video games can't be art," comment. If a Metal Gear movie were made, not only would the opposite happen, he'd take the comment to his grave just like Ken Kesey swore to never see the movie adaptation of his book One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

If he saw it, he'd be like, "WTF am I watching?" The Metal Gear games rely way too much on exposition, story telling to convoluted for the big screen to capture, and would take up way more hours than the average movie viewer would be willing to invest.

Maybe the Silent Hill case would happen where only die-hard fanatics of the series and a select few people are the only ones who actually manage to enjoy it, but no, a Metal Gear movie wouldn't change the way people look at video-game based movies.
