I believe the series was made to create a stealth-action game, which is another thing I'd like for them to bring back in the fifth one. There was a fantastic lack of stealth in MGS4. Regarding the cutscenes though, I see no reason why some of them couldn't have been more playable. Why couldn't you take over as Raiden to face Geckos and Vamp in Episode 2 for at least some of the time? How about the first time Snake gets effected by the nanomachines whackadoodles in Episode 1? How about Episode 3? They couldn't rework that entire episode so some of it was playable, like maybe a quick fight with Ocelot towards the end? Frankly it's not even the cutscenes themselves, just the lack of gameplay surrounding them. Any game that needs to bookend a long cutscene with two more long cutscenes with nothing but a save point to seperate them should probably find a way to sneak some game into there.

Metal Gear was made to create a stealth-action genre, but Metal Gear Solid was made to create the cinematic stealth-action genre.
I don't want to play as Raiden when the cutscene looked better than anything I could have done with him. There was plenty of gameplay, maybe not as many chances to hide (the game's motto was no place to hide), but it was the perfect ending to the best game series on earth (imo). It needed all those cutscenes to tell the story. Maybe there could have been some more codec convos, but then people would complain about that (even if they were all optional).
