The Codec was used for telling the story in 98. That was bad. Beyond that, the Codec in the first 3 Metal Gears was used to flesh out EVERYTHING. It was your link to your support team. Got a new gun? Call Nastash or Sigint. They'll tell you all about it. New environment? Call Master or Eva. Need some background on how to beat a boss, or some random trivia or an inside joke? Codec, Codec, Codec!! In MGS 4, there was rarely anthing good to talk about, or anyone to talk to. Those little hints and slips of the tongue make the game more immersive! Example:

Snake: Can we trust her?
Col. Cambell: More than you can trust me.....

Intriguing stuff. MGS4 did away with a lot of that.
