Mario kart wii is all about understanding how to exploit the item system. And learning not to take the lead at the very beginning. Excuse my lack of pc but mario wii has an affirmative action system designed to aid slow drivers. If you lead too quickly you get punished.
Let the computer lead so that the powerful shells get directed at the computer instead. Then use your item at the last second to take the lead.
