Gaming - Why Wii Hate? - View Post

I used to hate the playstation and PS2. But now that I look back at it, it was probably only because they were more successful than my N64 and Gamecube. I suppose I was a typical teenage fanboy. It was also because I perceived hostility from the Sony crown dismissing my choice of console as "childish" which I believed was unwarranted.

Now as I look back I have a huge amount of respect for Sony. I can appreciate that the PS and PS2 were great systems and did great things for the gaming market, expanding it into a wider demographic. I think that in the future, people who bash the Wii might feel the same way looking back.

When I went to Video Games Live last year I felt that behind the "console wars" pretty much everyone was united in their love of gaming. Perhaps all it needs is a common enemy to bring everyone together! If tomorrow some politician launched a massive attack on videogames as a whole, I think many people who are superficially wii haters would unite with the wii crowd in a situation like this. They'd probably shout "You can't just declare that video games are all unhealthy, just look at wii fit!" or "You can't say video games are all targetted at violent 12-30 year old men, just look at nintendogs!".

Let's not forget that the wii was, for the most part, the brainchild of Shigeru Miyamoto. And I challenge anyone who calls themselves a gamer to say that the entire industry doesn't owe one heck of a lot to this one man. Whether or not you're into his games, he really deserves your respect. That's surely acknowledged by everyone, isn't it?

P.S. I own a 360 and love playing loads of non-nintendo games too. Just to be clear!
