Ah well. Caution is needed in this case, though. Part of the problem with the whole "Black Hawk Down" thing was that in the initial effort in Somalia, we were merely there to protect UN groups who were distributing aid. During this phase, we were viewed as heroes by the populace. Eventually, however, the mission changed to one that was more confrontational of the Clans (the non-government warring factions), and with us against the clans, we were viewed as the enemy, which is why the people supported the taking of hostages.
In this case, the pirates are also viewed quite favorably by their people. Certainly we need to work to secure those sea-routes, but once they are secure, the initiative should shift to something resembling nation-building in Somalia itself.
