They have held Captain Richard Phillips captive, threaten Congressman, held ships on the high seas impeding int'l trade in the Gulf of Aden, and have promised retaliations.

Personally, I would have them tried as terrorists and have the ROE against them be take captives or shoot on sight if the forces are at risk.  These guys are strict Wahabis and are terrorists.  Anyone remember Black Hawk Down?

the pirates are terrorists you mean? not all somalis?

black hawk down was one of the worst films ive ever seen in my life

@Bold,

I really hope that is what he meant =P

And I don't think we need to treat pirates quite like terrorist because of the difference in motivations and tactics.  I think we should take a look back in history at how piracy was eventually dealt with the last time it was a problem. In short we should deal with it firmly and without hesitation, and without PC BS.

As an interesting side-note apparently there are reports that the Somali pirates holding phillips were out of ammo and were trying to trade the captain for their release.  It seems some folks are a bit upset that "the Americans" wouldn't accept this offer.  I would have preferred the pirates to surrender and face a court of law, but I'm not exactly upset with how things turned out either.  They knew the risks of engaging in piracy and I simply don't feel sorry for them at all.
