I decided to grab this game a month ago and it is easily my favorite JRPG this gen.

I think so. The middle towards the end pales in comparison to the beginning of the game.

I found the end to be quite a bit better then the beginning.

The end itself wasn't bad, but that whole second half sucked in comparison.

I think you talking about Part 3 cause Part 1 and 2 were freaking awesome. Part 3 was good but was not as good as Part 1 and 2. But i'm pretty sure thing will change on the PS3 version since Namco had to remove a lot of stuff due to the shortage of space on the Xbox 360's disk.
