It's hard for me to decide as a series atm because I didn't like MGS2 or 4 as much(I really really don't like Raiden, he was a pansy in 2 and he turned to high heels in 4 and I was literally cheering when I thought he might have died but then was crushed by disappointment later) but I love 1 and 3 while the SC series is more stable with the game play part, can't decide until I see the SC that's supposedly coming out next.
