Of course, they are pretty different games, so it's difficult to directly compare the two. Probably the biggest gripe I have about Splinter Cell is that it feels a lot more linear with fewer options to me. It has more of a puzzle feel while MGS definitely has more of an action game feel. And to those who say MGS doesn't offer any stealth elements, try playing on the hardest difficulty. I believe prior to MGS4, it results in an instant game over if you get spotted. And in MGS4, try getting the Big Boss emblem. 0 kills, 0 alerts, 0 healing items, 0 special items, unable to buy non-lethal ammunition from Drebin, and you have to beat the game in under 5 hours on Big Boss Extreme difficulty. @rocketpig: I think it's weird that you claim to be a big shooter fan, so you like Splinter Cell, then talk about how you hate MGS4 for having large sections that you played as a shooter, while you like Splinter Cell because it forces you to be more stealthy because of limited ammo. |
It's not really that shocking because it forces me to play a different style of shooter but it still forces me to play. On top of that, I adore the old style of shooter (descended from System Shock and whatnot) where ammunition is the most valuable commodity you have, not something you replenish continually. MGS4 ruined that. I ran through several missions without the slightest worry and then suffered through 30 minutes of cutscenes.
I loved MGS4. The parts I was able to play, that is. The beginning of the first mission and the third mission were pure gold in my eyes. Those were the parts of the game where I wasn't able to run through and cap everyone without worry. Unfortunately, MGS4 only provided me with about 2 hours of stealth gameplay. The cutscenes irritated me to no end but I won't discard that final boss fight (probably the best in all of gaming, IMO, despite its ridiculous controls) and Kojima's excess (sorry but Raiden is a shit character, end of story).
