that 30% in real terms, is below inflation though is it not?

even assuming that UK inflation has been 1% per year since 1974 (its been alot higher, especialy under the Conservatives in the 80's) then prices are up 35% since then, so the poor have lost out by at least 5%, because everything is that much more expensive.
