Some things MS established or pushed in the gaming industry:
- FPS on consoles; Okay we have seen GoldenEye, Time Splitters but there was no game that could touch Halo in any way
- Xbox Live Arcade; XBLA was available with the release of the Xbox360 in 2005. XBLA is great for short games for little money. Awesome games like Castle Crashers, Braid or Geometry Wars (2) were created or old classic games were ported to the Xbox360 like Sonic, Street Fighter or Soul Calibur
- Online Gaming on consoles; MS really established this. There was the Dreamcast and there was the PS2 or the GameCube but all the other online gaming devices back in the days were limited and inferior to Xbox Live.
- Adding a HDD to consoles; MS were the first to build a HDD in every console in 2001. Ironic that this has changed in 2009.
- Video on Demand; MS is really pushing VoD. The netflix subscription is one of a kind in this industry. There are 1200 movies available in the US, 550 in HD. And there are also 670 TV shows available, 120 in HD. That makes the Xbox360 the biggest offeror of on demand HD-content in North America. In Europe, the XBox360 is still the only console that offers VoD (Talking about continental Europe, don't know about UK). Universal just jumped in to support the video marketplace in Europe. MS is really pushing VoD.
- Achievements
- Foto Party
- Party-system
- Xbox Live Primetime
- etc
So MS does not just copy. They created / established / pushed some very cool stuff and I don't have a problem with Sony copy achievements or other features. Of course I won't have a problem with MS copying other successful Sony-features. That is just how the industry works and that is a good thing.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
