@Topic : Sony could in theory win this generation , not without serious damage being incured however . Realisticly there's pretty much no way Sony can "win" this genaration (i'm assuming your talking about marketshare) , the best thing Sony can do is reduce unit cost's , cut prices to a more mass market price point and try to make a profit this generation .

what do you mean damage? sony has lost more money then it has made with the ps2? is that what you mean? my theory is that sony could break even

Well there are various stratergies Sony could use to "win" or obtain marketshare . One would be to aggresivly cut the price below the cost of making the PS3 ( I think MS is or has employed this stratergy before , but they can afford it ) , this would have the benefit of boosting the PS3 sales , it's highly likely to overtake the 360 in hardware sales with a similar pricepoint ( currenty & historical data would strongly suggest this)  , but with the current losses Sony are making off the PS3 selling hardware at a loss to make profits of software sales would definetley not be a smart move.

Aggresivley price cutting would also damage consumer confidence in the PS3 and consequently affect the "Playstation" brand , something which initself is the most valuable component of Sony's gaming devision.

But "winning" is stupid talk , what really matters is making a healthy profit , Sony could possibly make more profit than Microsoft this generation if certain factors play into their hands ( Economic recovery , blu-ray penatration , strong software support etc) , but that's assuming multiple factors play into Sony's hands.
