I tried the demo and decided it sucked. Luckily I bought it on sale and found out the game itself is great, because the combat is only fun when you understand how deep it is, and in the real game the combat system builds gradually one mission at a time. It starts out fun and simple, and it never stops feeling simple but there are so many different possible strategies and approaches.
Also, the story really ties it together, and the opening movie, which seemed pretty dorky when I watched it in the demo, gets a lot better once you've gotten into the world a bit.
It's also one of those RPGs where the story makes the combat exciting even when you're just learning the basics, and the combat is so fun it makes you speed your way through the story.
Definitely a case of bad demo.
