“These crimes [against humanity] are particularly odious offences in that they constitute a serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or a degradation of one or more human beings; they are not isolated or sporadic events, but are part either of a government policy (although the perpetrators need not identify themselves with this policy) or of a wide practice of atrocities tolerated or condoned by a government or a de facto authority. However, murder, extermination, torture, rape, political, racial,
or religious persecution and other inhumane acts reach the threshold of crimes against humanity only if they are part of a widespread or systematic practice …” [1] This quote originally taken from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, defines crimes against humanity as a specific attack on a series of persons, in which as a part of a organized practice condoned by a government or state, causes the destruction of those persons’ life, among other malevolent acts. As of January 2008, 148 states have signed, with 108 having ratified, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. During 2002, the Bush administration removed the United States signature of the treaty along with the nation of Israel. Almost every nation in the world has some sort of abortion laws, most having at least to prevent the death of the mother legalized; of the 108 nations of the RSICC, 40 have legalized abortion to unrestricted and/or social reasoning to participate. Abortion is one of the most unspoken controversies disputed internationally. Legally, the United States have declared abortion legal up to 22 or 23 weeks into pregnancy. By the definition stated above, a crime against humanity is the “systematic practice” of “murder”. The controversy of abortion is whether or not the aborted have this right to life, and then by definition, are contrived to be victims of murder. The United States’ support of legalized abortion is “tolerated or condoned” by its legal and government systems, and thus the main question is asked: Is abortion a crime against humanity?"
And let the ****-storm commence. Please include sources for arguments as I want a well rounded debate. Is abortion a crime against humanity? And is it morally justified?
