who really cares which one is more powerful

I do, I think it's exciting to see the PS3's potential unfold. I also think some of this additional potential can already be clearly witnessed in PS3 exclusives such as Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (online multi-player), LittleBigPlanet (user created content), Killzone 2 (graphics, audio, online, etc), Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (good HDR combined with AA), Super Stardust HD (onscreen activity), Metal Gear Solid 4 (assets), etc.

Despite the Atari ST being cheaper at the time, the additional potential of the Amiga was an important reason why the ST was pushed out of the market eventually. Consindering mass propaganda, it seems many vivid 360 fans seem to care as well. Most current PS3 owners seem to care as the better specced 600 dollar PS3 considerably outperformed the 500 dollar PS3 at retail around launch.

Dreamcast were more powerful then the PS2

I never owned a PS2, but IMO the Dreamcast potential would have been held back by sticking to CD. The GameCube was IMO a kid targeted lunchbox console, it lacked games such as God of War, Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid, etc. The original XBox shared nearly all its games with the PC, it was like a cut down PC, I already owned a PC.

Unlike as was the case with regard to the 3DO, I think the PS3's potential will be realized, its installed base this early is already over 10 times as many users.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."
