 Not sure about that. The general public doesnt seem to stay on top of these things as much as "hardcore gamers" do. You know, people who read websites like this on a daily basis. And even thenthe current shelf stock should be mostly updated hardware no?  As an example, the guys at the office know about the RROD issue, but seem to be under the assumption the new units (like the Elites, Halo edition and new Pro's w HDMI) have had the issues resolved. Wether thats true or not, fear of rrod doesnt seem to be deterring their 360 buying decision.
