Being for equal rights doesn't define you as a liberal, unless you consider Abraham Lincoln, who was a Republican, to be a liberal. The same goes for taking care of the poor, etc., a role often assumed by religious organizations, even the very conservative ones.

Try not to confuse having a conscience with being liberal. In my mind, being a little liberal or a little conservative is a good thing, but being an extreme of either is a bad thing. Extreme liberals tend to have good motives but impractical/wishful approaches to problem solving, while extreme conservatives tend to be afraid of change and or callous to the needs of others.
