That's highly subjective. For me this gen Ninty 1st party > Sony 1st party, you may think different, that's your opinion. The objective criteria - sales - core and non-core Ninty franchises are selling a lot better than Sony's.

Criteria of success, there're no objective criteria of quality in games and many other kinds of media. If your bigger team makes less money than your rival's small team - you've got a problem in management department. Sony 1st parties are tempting me with ridicilously long development cycles and weren't able to give anything in last couple of years that I wanted (GT5, GOW3 and especially new Team Ico project - games I'm looking for).

So yes, their teams are bigger, but that means shit, 'cos bigger team won't translate into better games and even better sales..
