This is mainly it. You can thank MS's multi-billion dollar viral campaign for that. Their whole theory behind this is that most people are sheep and it appears they maybe right. They have people believing that sales effects the gamer's individual experience. It's sad.

I never cared about GCN sales. I knew they were in last but it didn't matter since they made money from the start instead of selling systems at a loss (also it had a ton of great games). Each system has their own exclusive games and it is up to Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony to make those exclusive games (or pay 3rd parties or just have 3rd parties claim exclusiveness). Pretty much you have it right it doesn't matter what the system sells because the games will be there (unless the system flops completely and cost the company too much to continue to the next generation).
