Carbon credits are one of the worst ways we could tackle the problem, because offset methods don't work at all as they aren't permanent.
The best way (and it isn't perfect) is renewable energy research. What about:
- Space-based solar panels with microwave transmission to Earth
- Generating power from the salinity gradient in major estuaries
- Generating power from the temperature gradient between the ocean surface and deep ocean
All of these methods could work but no one has given them a well-funded large-scale trial.
