Vista post SP1 was fine, unfortunately the hardware requirements to run it very well though were not widespread enough at release. Once people have a opinion that a product is flawed you may as well abandon it as soon as possible, pretty much like they did with Millenium Edition.
Windows 7 will kill XP eventually when they stop supporting it forcing businesses to consider upgrading. This is years away though.
