The "West-friendly" tiles the Japanese developers are working on won't be affected by Japanese sales. The 360 has sold nearly 29 million consoles out side of Japan to the PS3's 18 million. Historically the second place console in Japan sells between 4 to 6 million consoles. The PS3 won't be able to sell enough consoles in Japan to make up for the 360's lead in the West. Unless they were already deep into production for an HD platform. RPG's and other Japanese centric titles would have a better chance at profitability on the Wii. The Wii has lower development costs and twice as many users. If the Wii wasn't so successful in Japan, I could see your point about Japanese devs switching to the PS3 but that isn't the case. While it's fallen behind the PS2's pace, the Wii is still well ahead of the PS1's userbase for the same period of time in Japan. |
It really depends upon quality versus quantity when it comes to Wii and PS3 development. If the developers are true artists and want to bring out the best game they can with graphics that look as close as they can get them to the concept art or anime they'll choose to put their games on PS3 (much as Square and Sega are doing now putting games like Final Fantasy Agito on PSP while putting remakes on DS and Sega with games like Yakuza 3 and Valkyrie Chronicles on PS3). If on the other hand, all they care about is the bottom line they would put them on Wii. However, that could change. If a $400 to $500 PS3 can beat a $250.00 Wii five weeks in a row, then imagine what a $300.00 to $350.00 Playstation would be doing against the Wii at this time in Japan. It would consistently be selling as well as the PSP does to the DS.
