The reason they're whining is because Sony said made excuses for the lack of rumble. Stating that it was last gen or it would interfere with the motion controls. Now they are bringing that same last gen tech to their controller with motion controls.
As for 1up and MGS4, while I haven't gotten my hands on the DS3, I'd wager they've just forgotten that both the DS1 and DS2 had motors in each stick and they were independent of each other. If memory serves, the DS1 had a weaker motor in the right stick, but the DS2 has identical motors in each. I do recall playing games in which only one motor would be spinning, causing only one side of the controller to vibrate, but I can't remember and particular games at the moment. So I'm sure developers have utilized the indepent motors in the past, but perhaps Konami is pushing it further than before.
Anyway, bringing back rumble is great in my opinion. While it can just be annoying in some games, it can also add a lot to others and it's better to have the option than not. I just hope they don't jump to touch sense controllers in a couple years. While it may be more immersive I'd hate to have to continually upgarde my controller, lol.
