IMO, they're both influential.
Think about it: with Halo was born a new kind of gamer. The gamer who will sit outside a store at midnight eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Halo spurred a surge in sales for the FPS genre, yes, it DID create a new type of gamer. The rush of ONLINE goodness was born off of this franchise on consoles. It didn't create a new genre but a new type of gamer within the genre. Huge successes like Halos 2 & 3 were born off of this great feat.
With Metal Gear: a new genre of stealth action was born on consoles to create a story-driven, sneak-to-fight or flight tactical-based game. It too, brought in a new kind of gamer and while not producing sales the magnitude of which Halo has come to enjoy, really DID help move the industry forward and thus sequels like Metal Gear Solid 4 could be born, continuing that legacy.
These two franchises here are the reasons I'm happy to be a gamer, they BOTH helped push their respective genres AND took risks which paid off in the long run.
Congratulations to Bungie/Microsoft & Konami/Kojima & Sony/Nintendo for providing these great times in gamers' lives. Hats off to that!

Well written man, nice way to not piss off either side........I agree with your message.
For me it was Halo.....I wouldn't have even have owned a Xbox or a 360 without the Halo franchise. It and FF on the PS3 (moot point now) because, luckily, I can enjoy it on my 360.....:).
