Technically although not widespread the Saturn had online before the Dreamcast.

Getting warmer, but not quite there. The Genesis had online before its younger brothers (although, again like the Saturn, not very widespread) in the form of the Sega Channel, and some Japanese service (not quite sure of the name).

 Closer still, but not quite right. The NES had a modem as well for online play. I think someone did it before that even, but I can't remember the console. So in the end both leo-j and his friend were wrong.

In fairness to Leo, his friend was more wrong.
