Tell us the specs of the PC. If it's an off-the-shelf thing from (for example) Dell you're probably being ripped off and still end up with a bad PC.
A setup that will be good for midrange gaming is:
CPU - Any Pentium E5xxx >2.0GHz, Core 2 Duo >2.0GHz, Core i7, Phenom >2.3GHz, Phenom II, or Athlon X2 >2.6GHz.
Graphics - Any Radeon HD38xx, Radeon HD46xx, Radeon HD48xx, Geforce 96xx, Geforce 98xx or Geforce GTX2xx.
Anything else and it's not worth buying. A system with the cheapest of those components in can be had for under $450 right now, so there's no excuse not to get that.
