Hell. F*cking. No.
Nothing can ever compare to LotR. The mythos of the series is easily more expansive than any other work of fiction out there. There are so many back stories and histories like the Silmarillion (essentially the Bible of Middle-Earth), that other things just can't compare.
I don't think Halo can even compare to Harry Potter from a sheer popularity standpoint, or from a storytelling standpoint, let alone LotR, which is leagues above both.
And for all those touting the greatness of Harry Potter, ths story is excellent, and it's easily my second favorite series of books after LotR, but the books are written rather horribly. The sentence and paragraph structure can be very awkward at times.
Edit: Sorry, my LotR fanboyishness is showing. :P I can't WAIT until the extended editions of the films are released on Blu-Ray. Day one purchase for me!
