no, the hatred is mainly due to either of two reasons:
1.) insecurity about one's console purchase - he's not sure whether he bought the right one so he'll go online and trade virtual punches so that he can justify to himself that his console purchase was correct (most true with ps3 owners).
2.) "my stick is bigger than your stick" - the natural human need to gloat over others (most true with 360 and Wii owners).
