For the general audience, hell no. Linux will never work for the general public until they figure out a new method instead of requiring most software to be installed by command line. That and networking them are just not very easy to do if you have no linux knowledge (ie. the general public).
Having work experience with both Macs and PCs, the Macs are 10x more annoying to work with. The hardware is all proprietary and difficult to upgrade, when software fails it is 10x more difficult to find the problem and resolve it, OS X is basically on SP5 (if it went via Windows terms) and yet Apple charges $100 per service pack update. I can go on and on about how much of a PITA working with Macs is.
