Overclocking can get you better performance on cheaper parts. Just keep the following in mind:
It is very time consuming. Overclocking consists of changing settings a little bit at a time to see how far you can push the machine. Changing settings too far too fast can damage your processor or motherboard and cause you to have to replace them. If you overclock properly, you should not damage anything (though it has been known to happen.
Overclocking takes researching. You have to know things like when to increase the voltage running to your processor or graphics card.
Even if you overclock things perfectly, you are still reducing the lifetime of your parts.
