Exactly! Only EXTREME fanboys care about sales. REAL gamers care about a better gaming experience. Better graphics, better audio, better built quality, entertaining games, and more features justify the price and worthiness of a console. Now, since the beginning of 2008, what console has met those requirements more than the others (honestly)?

Better graphics & better audio - You're having a laugh that gamers care about this, last generation the console which had the worst graphics won. Non fanboys do not care about either of these as long as games look reasonable to them.
Better Build quality - Once again the worst console for reliability and build quality won last generation so the vast majority of real gamers don't care about that either.
Games - The PS3 doesn't have the best games library in many peoples opinion, stop deluding yourself by claiming the PS3's library to be ahead of the other consoles.
Having shown you're criteria for REAL gamers to buy a console is flawed then it leaves your question pointless. Also more features do not justify the price if people don't need them.
Obviously we cannot classify you as a EXTREME fanboy as you think sales are unimportant in peoples considerations of which console to own, therefore I'll classify you as the simple, bog standard, mundane fanboy. Of course sales matter, word of mouth is very important to generate interest and also nobody buys into a product they perceive as in trouble, generally speaking.
