I think you might have hit the nail on the tread with this one.  This combined with the slashed PS2 price would make sense.  It would have a huge install base that is for sure!

 

But then Sony wouldn't be encouraging PS2 owners to upgrade to the PS3.

GT5 is the biggest exclusive the PS3 will get, they would normally not do that. The only reason they might do it is that they need whatever cash they can get. Still, I don't think so.

 

In a cash strapped economy many PS2 owners might not be able to find the cash for the upgrade no matter what game comes out.  The difference in graphics between the two consoles is in my opinion enough to get the ones who can afford it to convert.  This would be a great fan service on the part of Sony, but also 10000000 sales of a PS2 version would generate a lot of cash!  Just a thought...
