Sony themselves said 140 million will be shipped by the end of 2009. The number sold to consumers is much lower.

Wikipedia =/= fact.

No.  Wikipedia has nothing to do with that. Let me quote from http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/1c46ad2e-5678-11dd-8686-000077b07658.html?nclick_check=1, which was posted on July 20, 2008:

Sony told those attending the video game industry’s E3 convention last week that sales of its original PlayStation, launched in 1994, had reached 102m units and the PlayStation 2 console had now passed 140m worldwide in its ninth year on sale.

note they are referring to Sony's E3 2008 presentations. That being said, I think that current actual PS2 sales of 130-135 million are a reasonable estimate as I cannot imagine that any retailer would want to have piles of decade-old electronics lying around. I could be wrong though.

The problem with that is it was disproved a long time ago.... Sony's own website showing recent retail shipments, and older "production" shipments (includes replaced consoles and other consoles not yet sold to retail) added up to just over 130 million at that time.

So it was a mistake by the mouth of whichever Sony employeee... he in fact meant to say 130 million, not 140 million.

Even so it is still a flawed number to use, because it includes any consoles Sony may have sent out as replacements to broken PS2s from 2000-2006.
