You have him for a long time. Then he leaves for a long time (he still appears, just not in your party). He rejoins for one dungeon. He leaves. He can rejoin you later permanently as long as you do something which I can tell you about later.

Do you at least get him early in the game?

I'll be fine if I get him as long as you say. Sounds better than the wife thing in DQV.
