For several reasons. 1. What's the point in keeping the old type of disc if everyone would have to buy a new DVD player capable of decoding these 720p movies. 2. Usually movies over 2 hours are around 5GB 3. The compression is very noticeable during dark scenes, therefore a movie like The Dark Knight looks pretty bad compressed. So basically Blu-ray (obviously) is far better at handling HD material, and supports higher resolutions, and better audio, and room for extras. And depending on film length, and what type of film it is (mostly dark, cartoon, very bright) the quality varies wildly with these 4.37GB files. Blu-ray is just better.

I know, I was just being an ass to whoever said that 4.3gbs could house several hours of blu ray quality video.
