There's a ninth hardware thread (another full SPU) on the PS3 running OS functions (of course you can create as many software threads you want), similar background OS functionality would have tap resources for this from one of its 3 cores on the 360. So it's worth mentioning. |
Assuming that all the SPEs run at 3.2ghz ( they don't) each can pull off on thread and only a specific thread that is put through a specific time to sychronize with the PPU's own data. At best you have 8 threads running and only two of them general purpose threads. As for software threads that only works with the PPU as the SPUs are specialized peices of hardware build for streaming data (which it does a increadibly fenominal job at... it can easily stream 16 1080p movies at the same time). The fact that Cryteck actually spent the time and effort getting and engine build towards the strength of the PS3 is great... it certainlly needs something to help it out as the URE3 doesn't seem to really work as effectively on the system as was hoped. I just wish someone would ignore this bullshit and just use Source... it's so much more flexable and it's a beautiful engine even after years of being out. Someone should also get some of those awesome mods on consoles... wonder if you could do that with XNA
