I'm assuming you mean 2D sprites and not actually 2D RPGs like Paper Mario and Odin Sphere/Muramusa. Anyhoos, I'm going to go with sprites. I feel the style holds up better over the years and that gets more and more obvious as FF VI continues to look ok while I don't even think Traveller's Tales could do a better job making Lego Final Fantasy VII than Square already did in '97.
